Oscillating between various performance, free improvisation and composition, Hong Kong multidisciplinary/multimedia artist
Chi Him Chik expands the spectrum of performance practices from the acoustic instrument of saxophone to megaphone, screaming, computer, audiovisuals, and music theatre, and has presented his works in different countries and cities across Europe, Asia, and North America, and has made appearances as artist and performer in various festivals and prestigious venues, including Taktlos Festival, Darmstadt Summer Course, Stuttgart Filmwinter Festival, and the Theater Basel.
Chi Him has won several prestigious competitions and is the first saxophonist from Hong Kong to reach the semi-final round of the Jean-Marie Londeix International Saxophone Competition. As an advocate of new music, he is responsible for the premiere of numerous of works by contemporary composers with diverse cultural backgrounds – including the world premiere of Chinese composer Chen Yi's “Chinese Folk Dance Suite” for Soprano Saxophone and Piano and the orchestral premiere of Thai composer Narong Prangcharoen's Saxophone Concerto “Maha Mantras”.
Chi Him received his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Performance from Bowling Green State University in the United States and Master’s Degree in Specialized Musical Performance (Improvisation) from the Hochschule für Musik in Basel, Switzerland. His mentors include Dr. John Sampen, Zach Shemon, Fred Frith, Alfred Zimmerlin, Michel Roth, and Johannes Kreidler.
Inspired by the New York downtown scene and Japan noise music scene, as well as the career and works of the corresponding artists including Nam June Paik, Fred Frith, Merzbow, and Keiji Haino, Chi Him is currently focusing on opening up his own works to contemporary art while dealing with the political situation in his home town Hong Kong.
戚子謙是一位融合表演藝術、自由即興和作曲等多重身份的當代藝術家。他音樂演奏的範圍不僅僅局限於薩克斯管原聲,其中還融合了電子音樂,聲樂,視聽元素和音樂劇場等不同的聲音與形式。戚氏曾於亞洲,歐洲及北美洲多個國家,包括德國,瑞士,中國,美國等地進行演出,並參與過不同國際音樂節,其中包括國薩克斯風年會及Darmstadt Summer Course等等。
戚子謙是第一位在Jean-Marie Londeix 國際薩克斯風比賽中晉身準決賽的香港薩克斯風演奏家。他同時亦是第四十八屆鮑林格林州立大學音樂比賽,第五十五屆Lima管弦樂團青年藝術家音樂大賽,以及兩屆Douglas Wayland 室內樂比賽的優勝者。
戚子謙作為演奏家擁有深厚的古典音樂底蘊,同時對新音樂亦非常熱愛。他曾與不同文化背景的當代作曲家們合作多部作品的世界首演,其中包括居美華人作曲家陳怡,以及美國作曲家及自由即興演奏家Fred Frith。
戚氏畢業於美國鮑林格林州立大學(Bowling Green State University),師從Dr. John Sampen,並於瑞士巴塞爾音樂學院(Basel Hochschule für Musik)獲得碩士學位,主修自由即興演奏。
受紐約當代音樂和日本喧鬧音樂的啟發,現在戚子謙正致力於將自己的作品向當代藝術昇華。
