until the other side... is the third station of Bridging ACTs.
This work is associated with the concept of Defusion in ACT. It aims to help the visiter to understand that thoughts are just thoughts - they are temporary mental events but not facts or reflections of their identity. By practicing cognitive defusion, participants can learn to create distance from their thoughts rather than being controlled or defined by them.
Before entering the work, a narrative text is presented:
Were you able to let the thoughts follow you? Were you able to walk closer to those emotions?
As an observer, how do you feel watching this happen?
Sometimes, the only way to cope with this is to make space for these thoughts and emotions.
When we can contain and make space for these thoughts, we often gain the ability to notice other thoughts -
Some you may not have been aware of before.
Bridging_Defusion - Until the other side...
Now, you’ve learned to make space for any thoughts and emotions.
In addition to it, thoughts are not permanent — they are not sticky. They flow continuously, like a stream.
In the next experience, Until the other side... , try to let all your thoughts flow freely around you.
If you walk faster than the thoughts, you may notice some kinds of disruptions. Instead, take a step back and allow the thoughts to flow naturally to the other end.
Pay attention to other thoughts in the space as well — observe how they come and go.
Notice how it feels to simply watch these thoughts without holding on to any one of them.
This work is an interactive installation. Texts from the archive are constantly typed out and flow from the beginning to the end of the 12-meter passage. When the visiter moves too fast or big in gesture , the computer detects that, slows down and eventually stop the flow of the text and create glitching textures. The concept is inspired by the children's game "Red Light, Green Light", and it intends to reinforce slow and conscious movement to the visiter in the space, hence letting the thoughts (flowing on the floor) to come and go.
